From almonds and cashews to walnuts and Brazil nuts and beyond, we know that nuts are delicious – and healthy! Nuts provide a good source of antioxidants and fiber and have been shown to lower cholesterol, inflammation, and risk of heart disease. Nuts taste great alone, in trail mix, baked into bread or pancakes, tossed into a salad, or blended into nut butter.

But beyond their satisfying flavor and myriad health benefits, what do you know about nuts? Here are some guidelines to common questions about the shelf life of nuts to make sure they’re nut-thing but fresh and delicious!

How Long Do Nuts Last?

Most nuts remain fresh for three to six months. Raw nuts stored in an airtight container and a cool, dark area should last six to twelve months. For optimal flavor, we recommend purchasing fresh nuts and consuming them within two weeks of the purchase date.

Each specific type of nut has a different shelf life, and as a bulk nut supplier, we take care to put a “best by” date on all of our packaging so that you can easily access that information.

How Do You Know if Nuts Are Stale?

A sour, off-putting smell is the strongest indicator that nuts have turned stale. Stale nuts tend to have a softer texture, and if you dare to take a bite, you’ll note that their usual crunch is no longer there.

If you don’t notice a smell but want to be sure the nuts are okay before risking a taste test, do a thorough visual check. If the nuts need to be shelled, shell them. If you discover mold on the in-shell nuts, they’re clearly done for. If the outside of the nuts appears to be shriveled or dried out, it may still be safe to consume, but the flavor will be lacking.

How Can I Keep Nuts Fresh for Longer?

Proper storage from the get-go is essential for keeping nuts fresh, as nuts not stored well will lose their flavor faster. Refrigeration is the best way to store nuts and can boost their shelf life. You can store nuts for up to four months in a refrigerator and up to six months in a freezer. In-shell nuts last longer than shelled nuts.

Nuts contain a lot of unsaturated fat, which makes them more prone to going rancid. They will taste bitter, sour, and almost chemical-like if they go rancid. Light, oxygen, and heat all increase the likelihood of nuts going bad, so by storing nuts in your refrigerator or freezer, you’ll be limiting their exposure to all three of those components.

If you’re going to eat the nuts in the near future, keeping them in a cool, dark spot in your cupboards or pantry is a-okay. As long as they’re in an airtight container and are consumed within a few weeks, they’ll be good to go!
